The entire school enjoyed a day of fun at Kilili Beach. The activity allowed the upper graders to mingle and socialize with the lower graders constructing harmony amid the pack.

Field Trip to American Memorial Park

The sixth grade class went on a field trip to American Memorial Park. We first went to the museum there. We learned about World War II. We even had ranger Nancy take us around the museum and tell us about things that happened in the war. Like the story about the atomic bomb. I always thought that the atomic bomb was just a bomb with lots and lots of explosives, but no. I realized it was something different. Going to the museum made me smarter. It made me realize how much people on Saipan suffered from the war. I’m glad that I was able to go there.

Ms. Gemma Villanueva of Joeten Store kindly guided us. We went at the storage behind the shop and we were in a drink refrigerator. It was freezing cold! The offices at the second floor relates to money. They try to make profit.

If you are interested, please see Ms. Christina Sazachiro at the 1st grade classroom.

All students may have things bother them throughout the day. Please feel free to drop off your concern in a labeled box for comments in the cafeteria. I will give you some feed back every end of the week. All comments are confidential and must be dealt privately. The comments will be published anonymously on the Tigers Gazette. Instructions to be followed.

One day a blonde came home from work and sat on her front steps, sobbing. Her next door neighbor, whose name was Julie, went over to see what was wrong. The blonde said, “My mom died today!” and she sobbed. Julie invited her over for coffee until she felt better. When she did actually stop crying, she left and went to work the next morning. When she came home she was sobbing… again. Julie went over to see what was wrong… again. And the blonde said, “I called my sister (who was also blonde) today and she said that her mom died too!” and she sobbed even louder.

We're Talking Teen Health

According to www.nlm.nih.gov "Obesity means having too much body fat. It is differrnt from being overweight, which means weight too much. The weight may come from musde, bone, fat and / or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height."

Obesity scales are increasing each passing year without any signs of depression. Statistics say that obesity tripled in the last 30 years to nearly 15% of everyone from age 6 to 19. The media has constanly epitomized obesity or being overweight as an imminent peril that should be extinguished, or else. Like in television shows or in movies, the skinny characters are always the successful ones, the popular ones, the center of attention, and the belle of the ball. The pop culture has taught us that being skinny is good and being fat is not. Students also discern that being overweight maybe a serious jeopardy in their social status. After watching the whole media lambaste obesity, teens might find not eating anything at all as charismatic and eating healthy as horrid.

So then here comes the resolution most teens turn to, dieting. One of the most widespread fad diets these days is the 'Starvation Diet'. From the term itself, it certainly doesn't sound anywhere near healthy. With the pressure coming from the media, and the never ending teenage anxiety, most of the teens resolve to diet to attain the 'perfect' body figure. Most of the teens evaluate their bodies against models and Hollywood stars and they concentrate on the parts of their anatomy that they dislike. The reality is that models and hollywood stars are 15-23 percent lower in weight and 5-6 inches taller in height than the 'average' American. No wonder roughly 95 percent of females whine about their body figures.

As teens starve them-selves with intense desires to lose weight and look perfect, more weight epidemics come to life. They prefer the so-called 'Fast weight- loss diets' than the healthy way of losing weight like exercising and eating healthy foods.

Anorexia and bulimia are grim, life-threatening maladies. In the reported cases in the U.S. nearly 10 million women and 1 million men, mostly teenagers, are affected by these disorders. It is also estimated that another 25 million people suffer from Binge Eating Disorder, also known as Compulsive Overeating. These eating disorders are liable for over 300,000 deaths every year. One in every ten cases of anorexia leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, and suicide or other medical complications. Eating disorers are serious mental health issues. Without help, about 20% of people with eating disorders die.

These disorders usually co-occur with depression, subtance abuse and anxiety disorders. Treatment for eating disorders usually entail team approach; including individual therapy, family support, and friends' encouragement. Prevention is always better than treatment. Love, security, attention, and supportive and healthy environment are good foundations for a healthy living.

Field Trip - 6th Grade

Field Trip to American Memorial Park

The sixth grade class went on a field trip to American Memorial Park. We first went to the museum there. We learned about World War II. I always thought that the atomic bomb was just a bomb with lots and lots of explosives, but no. I realized it was something different. Going to the museum made me smarter. It made me realize how much people on Saipan suffered from the war. I’m glad that I was able to go there.

Our class didn’t just go to the museum. After we were finished learning about WW2, we went to the park to eat. We had a barbeque. When we all were done eating, we played games. The first game we played was blindfolded soccer. There were teams of three. What we did was have two people be blindfolded. The person who was not blindfolded guided the two blindfolded people. The goal was that the non-blinded person had to lead the two blind people to kick the ball through the goal.

After playing blindfolded soccer, we played capture the flag (CTF). It was really fun. There were two sides and a line between two sides. There was a flag on each side. We divided the class into two teams. Each team tried to capture the enemy’s flag. However, if you cross onto the enemy’s side and they touch you, then, you have to go to jail. The only way you can get out of jail is if one of your teammates comes and touches you. We did a lot of running and had lots of fun.

When we got on the bus, we went to see The Last Command Post. We saw tanks and artillery guns. Then, we went back to our home school, the Ladera International School of Saipan, At last, our informative and fun-filled journey ends.

Field Trip - LISS

Ladera International School got a taste of the outside world (not that we don’t get any in our school campus sitting on top of the hill) during the eventful day of February 14, 2008. The entire school enjoyed a day of fun at Kilili Beach. The activity allowed the upper graders to mingle and socialize with the lower graders constructing harmony amid the pack.

The agenda of the day consisted of a 2-mile walk as a jumpstart that was led by the older graders (7th-10th grade). The day’s activities included soccer, water balloon fight, capture the flag, three legged races and wheelbarrow races. The menu for the picnic lunch included a complete meal of barbecues, hotdogs, potato salad, and rice. The group started to pack their things at about 2:30 in the afternoon to start our journey back to school. Everyone was worn out and some of the students even fell asleep on the bus, including myself. Despite all the exhaustion from that day, I would still gladly say, it was all worth it.

One thing you must NEVER do is to wear your pants lower than your boxers, unless you plan on being a plumber. One more thing is wearing the same clothes for three or two days in a row, this is not only for fashion but most sspecially for personal hygiene.

In the fashion world there are some new things that can help you with whatever you want to do with your style. There are hairsprays, gel, belts, and other stuff in stores such as Dolphin wholesale. We're not saying that all boys smell bad, we're just saying that it would help if you take our advice. We guarantee you’ll have higher self esteem. You can start by taking showers daily. If you're one of those guys who wants to be out there and make a fashion statement, try wearing a simple tee with ripped up jeans. Choosing the same color for your pants and tee is going way overboard. Even wearing the same level of lightness or darkness is a bit extreme.

All girls like to have fun and let their hair down; but if you want to stay clean, tie it up once in a while. This can lessen the oil in your hair and prevent lice being spread. You can make it cute by tying it high with a ribbon wrapped around it. Clothes are the biggest issue for girls. The hardest part about waking up has to be looking for what to wear.

If you really aren’t sure, keep it simple so you won’t have to regret it during the middle of school when you're more aware of your surroundings. The biggest style hit for the year of 2008 is wearing long shirts with cute short cover ups. Short skirts with leggings and skinny jeans are a tie for the leg wear.

Message from the President

Message from the President

This year has had its challenges, its surreal difficulties, but also its great accomplishments. As we continue to push the Ladera Tiger pride in the islands as well as abroad, I am certain that only good things will come of this.

With this new medium to communicate amongst students, teachers, administrators, parents and/or guardians, I am ecstatic to know that this first edition newsletter is written by our very own students who have taken pride to ensuring that as a school, we are accomplished and always moving in the right direction for progress.

“Making every experience an educational one” is always stated by this school. This theme that we are embracing, allows better and more unique learning experiences for all students here at LISS. We are the only true international school on Saipan that offers a gateway to many opportunities through our partnership with Missouri Academy and Northwest Missouri State University. With hard word and dedication from all teachers, students, administrators, including the needed support from parents and/or guardians, we believe that our TIGERS can take advantage of what LISS offers for their future to be successful.

Manchester United Wins
It was a wonderful game. Manchester had the easiest game in this league. They started the game without Wayne Rooney and Christiano Ronaldo. They used substitute members instead. But still the game was awesome. Owen Hargreaves and J.S Park opened the first goal in this league. Especially it was the first goal to Hargreaves after he came to Manchester. When they got a free-kick in front of the penalty box, they just balanced to kick the ball, and Hargreaves kicked the ball without hesitation and it went exactly into the goal post, even a second goal by Park. It was a nice heading shot. Park has not played for almost a year but manages to make a score for the team. Third goal was made by O'Shea, actually it was made by Fulham's defender. It was a good game. And I expect that they will have a good game with Lyon in the Champions League.

The teacher that we interviewed is Mr. Jack Angello, only to find some humorous responses into our questions.

Christina: what is your outlook in life?
Mr. Angello: To quote satchel page: “don’t look back, something might be gaining on you.”

AJ: If you weren’t teaching history what other subjects would you teach?
Mr. Angello: Fast food, cooking, and eating

Christina: How did you convince your self to become a teacher here at LISS?
Mr. Angello: I enjoy teaching!

AJ: Why did you come to Saipan?
Mr. Angello: I got lost looking for Bali.

Christina: do you enjoy teaching us even if we can be really tempting to attack?
Mr. Angello: Well-equipped teachers should know some type of Kung-Fu, knowing that students may attack you at any time or place, even at Joeten’s shopping Center!

Biography
By: Mr. Jack Angello

As the story is told in taverns and playgrounds throughout lesser Los Angeles, around 1946, an inebriated stork got lost on a very hot day and mistakenly dropped a young boy and six pack of cold beer in the lap of a hard-working construction worker, Tony Angello, in Pacoima, California. The thirsty worker looked at his loving wife, Mildred, and said what the hay. They kept both packages, a boy named Jack, and the six packs that was named Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer.

Jack grew up in Los Angeles where he completed high school and college. He then went to Saipan with no money (and no honey) and worked for Mount Carmel Elementary School for sixty cents an hour, and between travel and bumming around, continued to work at many different jobs over the years. He has experienced some great adventures and even got a doctorate degree in education in 1996. Dr. Jack always liked to teach.

Thirty years later, Jack is again teaching at a nice school on Saipan and he still has no money ….but he does have a honey (wife) and two fine kids. Jack still appreciates the sight of a wayward stork looking for a place to drop a wide-eyed, adventurous child into the arms of an appreciative parent.

The Legend of 500 Years

Chapter 1

Lots of stories have a long, sad tale of endless heroics. Others have the pointless comedy of the characters. Why I brought this up? Because I want you to know that all stories don't have happy endings. Not in my case, anyway.

I am Tsubasa. My real name is currently unknown; I seek to find it one day.

Well, what happened? How do all stories start? Most start along the lines of, "A long, long time ago". However, I am probably unique. Well, I got up.

Knowing this, you may read on...

My eyes opened.

Sunshine poured into the room. I was blinded, and staggered out of bed. Adjusting my eyes, I made out the outlines of my room. Small, damp, dirty. Like one of those places you wouldn't want to wake up in.

Anyway, I managed to get up and stand upright. There my day began. Not a good start.

Let me introduce myself. Tsubasa Hirano, or so I'm called. I'm 15. I live in the Villa of the Canyon.

The Villa of the Canyon is, of course, a village. The last of humanity live here. Why? You'll find out. This is earth, 4019. Got a problem?

I got dressed and lumbered down stairs.

I've a house all to myself. Cool, aye? My parents died, and so I've got my own place, money, and all those assortments a normal guy has. Normal here.

You see, the Villa is protected by a militia. Against what? Rixor Zarr. Again, you'll find out who-- or what--he is.

All I know is he has an army of dead people. Undead, we call them.

I've seen several. Once, when I was younger, a neighbor got it. He was killed. Another time, a friend of mine was Undead, because of an attack. He died in pain.

So, almost the rest of the world is basically out to get us. No humans left, but us.

I reached the door...

And walked straight into a group of people. Hurrying people, by the looks of it. And then it struck me. I should be hurrying too. Today was the village meeting. Rou (the Elder) would be talking to all those that are 15 by the year. If I miss it... well... let's say I would be feeling bad for a while. They use a tactic of corporal punishment to enforce their rules (I get beat. Sheesh).

So I ran. I ran, and ran, until I could see the place. And, looking back, I smashed into something. Or tripped over it.

"YEEAAARGH!!?"

Not a graceful way to land, but I thought I cracked a rib. I added the question mark 'cause I couldn't understand what happened. Until I asked.

"What'd I do? I wasn't late, was I?"

"Nothing, but getting in my way."

Oh. Just Manatsu. What a laugh.

He tripped me.

Grimacing, I got up and pretended to choke him to death (I considered trying it). Of course, he's a few times bigger than me, so I quit right away. However, despite our physical appearances, we do get along. I employ verbal abuse as a weapon, and it works well. Until someone yells to shut up.

"Break a leg, will you?" he said.

"You just have no sense of humor".

"Yeah. Not an annoying one, anyway"

I started to walk away from the idiot, and broke into a run. And, before I knew it, I crashed again. This time, into a girl about the same size as me. I didn't know her name at that time.

"YEEAAARGH!!?"

Ooof. Not again. Well, it's not pleasant to hit your ribs IN THE SAME PLACE TWICE. I seriously considered about déjà vu.

Anyway, I got angry at my luck and had a short outburst. I won't include what followed except "Oh of all the rotten..."

Manatsu looked away. Others hurried on their ways. Miki looked me in the eye and said one word.

"Whatever..."

I retorted with a snort and shuffled away. I noted that her black hair wasn't combed at all. Uh-huh. That was like, weird. Hmm.

I trudged into the hall.

What I heard would change my life forever.

Clubs and Activities

Clubs and Activities

Activities

There are several interactive programs that are held after school. Everyone is encouraged to join them and the teachers will be more than happy to accept you. The activities are primarily focused on enhancing endurance, experience and confidence.

One of the activities that are held is basketball. It starts at 3:30 pm and ends at 4:30 pm. The best and most kind coach is Mrs. Janel Villegas. She is working hard to prepare them for the forthcoming competition this spring.

Another activity that is held after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays is Math Court. However, you have to be in middle school or higher (6-10th grade) to be qualified. It can be fun for all you math lovers! (I personally dislike math). The Math Court coordinator is Mrs. Rachelle Ong. It is held in the 7th and 8th grade classroom. Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On these same days, Math Court for K-2nd is held. Math Court for 3-5th grade is held at Ms. McGuire's classroom at the same time.

Another activity is the Middle School Forensic League (MSFL). MSFL is chiefly focused on improving your confidence and honoring your drama skills. The coordinator for MSFL is Ms. Maria Mettao, a teacher at Tanapag Elementary School. When joining MSFL, you must first learn the concept of being there and just practicing because the competition is not nice!

Primary Grade Forensic Competition (PGFC) is for Grades K-5. It is held at the 6th grade classroom from 3:15-4:00pm. The coaches for PGFC are Ms. Sakaziro and Ms. Michelle.
Again, the activities mentioned above are for everyone! Just prove yourself and maybe you'll be on a plane to your next NFL game or to the Nationals in the States! (Ok, Maybe not. But WHO KNOWS?!)

Field Trip - 3rd Grade

3rd Grade Class Diary

Next, we went to DPS. We had a change to look around several offices where they investigate, solve and prevent problems.

We went to a Japanese restaurant for lunch. Since 3G had a practice how to use chopsticks the day before, they were very good at using them! 3G studied a story about a Japanese girl in Reading, and they learned about Japanese food. According to the request of Mrs. Nigh, the owner of Torihide gave us extra food! How nice!

Finally, we went to Saipan Zoo to learn about zookeeper’s job. We learned it’s not easy to be zookeepers. They have a lot of responsibilities.

On April 13 we had another getaway to Aqua Resort Club to learn about the work of hotel employees. Ms. Sachiko Mafnas and Ms. Elphidia Sablan kindly showed us around. Guest relation workers can provide us various tourists’ information. Like how can we go to Managaha. ARC is a great place for parties for all sorts of anniversaries like Birthday, Christening, and many more! We appreciate those who accepted our visit and spend time for us. Thanks to the Joeten Store, DPS, Saipan Zoo and Aqua Resort club, 3G learned a lot about Social Studies, Goods, Profit, and Service.

School Newspaper Rules

• Everyone must attend in every meeting. (Not unless some important circumstances prevent them to do so.)
• Everyone must submit their assigned articles on the designated due date. (This way we could make sure we meet the deadlines.)
• Staffers must respect officers. (Ex. Editors, teachers, etc)
• Denied articles are to be rewritten of asked to.
• Vulgar language is strictly prohibited to be printed or submitted in the first place.
• Don’t gossip.
• No discriminating, no racism, no sexism.
• No making fun of people without their consent.
• Everyone must bring their own notebook and a pen during meetings for writing purposes.
• Meetings maybe rescheduled if circumstances prevent the staff in going to a certain meeting. (Ex. School events, cancellation of classes)
• Meetings maybe canceled if everything has been discussed on the prior assembly.
